Nous trouvons à ce niveau des notions de routage, de contrôle de flots, et d'adressage.
Par exemple, le protocole IP de la suite TCP/IP est un protocole de couche réseau.
Type de matériel travaillant dans la couche réseau : routeurs, et certains switches de niveau 3.
Type d'information traitée : les paquets.
