Nimègue se trouve au sud-est de la province de Gueldre, à proximité des provinces du Brabant-Septentrional et de Limbourg
Ancien camp romain, c'est une des plus anciennes villes du pays
Nimègue fait également partie de l'eurorégion Rhin-Waal créée en 1973 à cheval sur l'Allemagne et les Pays-Bas.
