Brives-sur-Charente est une commune du Sud-Ouest de la France, située dans le département de la Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine)
Ses habitants sont appelés les Brivois et les Brivoises. Anciennement appelée simplement Brives, la commune prend son nom actuel le 8 mars 1962.
Géographie
Brives-sur-Charente est une des étapes d'un sentier de grande randonnée balisé, le GR 360.

Il est issu du terme briva (autrement noté brīuā) et signifie « pont » en langue gauloise.
Il existe de nombreux Brive et Brives en France, ainsi que Brèves. On note également de nombreux composés, dont les plus connus sont Samarobriva « pont sur la Somme », ancien nom d'Amiens et Briva Isaræ (Pontoise.
