La ville est née le 16 mars 2004 de l'union des villes de Leinefelde et Worbis avec les communes de Breitenbach et Wintzingerode
Elle est la plus vaste et la plus peuplée de l'arrondissement devant son chef-lieu Heilbad Heiligenstadt et le centre économique et administratif de l'est de l'arrondissement.
