Le rat de bois est le premier élément du cycle sexagésimal chinois
Il est appelé jiazi ou kia-tseu en chinois (chinois traditionnel et simplifié : 甲子 ; pinyin : jiǎzi), gapja en coréen, kōshi en japonais et giáp tý en vietnamien
Il est précédé par le cochon d'eau et suivi par le buffle de bois. À la tige céleste jia (甲) est associé l'arbre du yáng (élément bois) et par le rameau terrestre zi (子), l'eau du yang et le signe du rat
Dans la symbolique des cinq éléments, le jiazi correspond donc à « l'eau qui donne naissance au bois
»
