Elle est le chef-lieu du district de Lugano. Lugano est la troisième place financière suisse et également, grâce à son climat, sa végétation luxuriante et ses paysages, un centre touristique important
Il s'agit de la plus grande ville de langue italienne en dehors de l'Italie.
