Caractérise un microordinateur doté d’une configuration automatique, c’est-à-dire pourvu d’un système d’exploitation et de progiciels pré-installés en usine, ce qui lui permet de fonctionner dès son branchement.
A présent le Plug and Play améliore considérablement nos conditions de travail, notamment dans le branchement de périphériques amovibles (par exemple en usb ou firewire), mais les début laborieux lui avaient valu le surnom de Plug and Pray, ce qui signifiait "Branche et prie" .
