Jobe Smith, simple d'esprit et souffre-douleur de la ville, interesse vivement un de ses voisins, le docteur Angelo, genie de l'electronique, qui est l'inventeur d'un programme qui stimule l'intelligence des animaux. La production prétendit que le film était basé sur une nouvelle de Stephen King. Bien que l'écrivain ait bien écrit la nouvelle La Pastorale, (The Lawnmower Man, titre original du film), son histoire était totalement différente de celle du scénario du Cobaye. King intentera un procès à la production pour que son nom soit retiré de l'affiche. Procès qu'il gagnera.
