West Point, 1830. Par un sinistre matin d'hiver, le corps d'un élève officier est découvert. Cette mort se révèle encore plus tragique quand on s'aperçoit à la morgue que le cœur du jeune homme a été habilement retiré de sa poitrine. Craignant que leur nouvelle académie militaire ne pâtisse de cet acte sauvage, ses dirigeants font appel à un policier du coin, Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), pour résoudre le meurtre. Le code du silence des élèves officiers entravant l'enquête, Augustus Landor demande à l'un d'entre eux de l'aider à élucider l'affaire, un cadet excentrique un brin poète qui méprise la rigueur militaire et répondant au nom d'Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).
