En 19 PRD, le ka-tel de Roland (ou classe d’apprentis-pistoleros) charge ses armes pour la première fois. Il ne reste que treize élèves sur les cinquante-six. Cort est trop malade pour assister à la Cérémonie de Présentation (c’est la première fois après 35 années d’observance des traditions).
Neuf semaines plus tard, Cort meurt empoisonné par la poussière qui recouvre le livre.
