Thalie's best friend begs her to ask Bertrand if he loves her. Although Thalie secretly loves Corinne's boyfriend herself, she reluctantly agrees. Finding the task difficult, Thalie stumbles through her words and Bertrand, thinking she is asking for herself, immediately jumps in to tell Thalie that he has secretly loved her for years. Thalie's happiness is mixed with anguish for her friend. But when she tells Corinne the truth, Corinne is happy because it means that her relationship with Serge will not cause Bertrand pain.
