Billy the Kid emprisonné au Texas pour 1247 ans de travaux forcé est convoqué pour être jugé au Nouveau-Mexique. Lucky Luke est chargé de l'y mener. En route Billy passe ses nuits dans la cellule du shérif des villes traversées alors que Lucky dort à l'hôtel. Une nuit, Billy the Kid fait la connaissance de Bert Malloy, qui doit être libéré le lendemain et qui propose de l'aide à Billy pour le faire évader durant le voyage.
