En 336 PRD, dans le Grand Bois du Couchant, les pistoleros découvrent le Rayon Ours-Tortue. Selon les connaissances de Roland, la Tour Sombre se trouve à la croisée de tous les Rayons. Ils commencent donc à suivre le Sentier du Rayon en direction du sud-est.
Dans l’Anneau de Parole, Jake Chambers est ramené dans le monde de Roland et rejoint le ka-tet. Pendant ce processus, Susannah est violée par le démon de l’Anneau de Parole qui est en fait l’Oracle des Montagnes qui intervient dans un plan à plus grande échelle. Elle tombe enceinte. L’Oracle des montagne sous sa forme femelle avait prélevé la semence de Roland, qui a été utilisée lors du viol de Susannah.
Ote, le bafou-bafouilleux rejoint le ka-tet.
Le ka-tet arrive à River Crossing.
Le ka-tet arrive à Lud et embarque à bord de Blaine le Mono, un véhicule contrôlé par une intelligence artificielle.
Durant le trajet qui relie Lud à Topeka, Blaine menace le ka-tet de tous les tuer s’ils ne parviennent pas à le battre à un concours de devinettes. Après une partie durant laquelle Blaine trouve toutes les réponses sans hésitation, c’est Eddie qui finit par le vaincre en lui posant des blagues absurdes et totalement illogiques auquelles un ordinateur ne peut pas répondre.
