A Elizabeth (New Jersey), Jack Mort, le pousseur, le pourvoyeur de mort, largue une grenade sous-marine, ce qui consiste concrètement à faire tomber une brique sur une personne. La brique percute le crâne de la fillette (Odetta Walker) dans des éclats de sang. Ensuite, toujours dissimulé sous un sweat-shirt trois fois trop grand, des lunettes de soleil et un bonnet hors saison dissimulant ses cheveux blond-roux, il emprunte l’itinéraire de repli qu’il a soigneusement établi et quitte les lieux sans être vu.

La police conclura à un accident.

Ce traumatisme crânien et le coma qui en résulte sont à l’origine de la schizophrénie d’Odetta Holmes et l’apparition de Detta Walker qui fusionneront pour former Susannah.

Choix de date

Dans Les Loups de la Calla, Susannah déclare:

— Mon père et Pop Mose ont institué un fidéicommis à mon intention, mais il a pris fin en 1959, quand j’ai eu vingt-cinq ans.

Cela nous donne 1934 comme année de naissance pour Odetta. Elle a cinq ans lorsque Mort lâche une brique sur elle, donc nous sommes en 1939.
