Four years earlier, Jacques had bought a rural estate from Hector Santon and now he is returning to live there as a successful writer. But Santon's daughter, Catherine, still lives there and greets him by throwing pans at him. After her father's death, a deal was made for Catherine's mother-in-law to stay there until other arrangements could be made. Josette, who had married Santon for his money, had left without taking Catherine. Now Catherine has a reputation of being something of a savage, but Jacques takes an interest in her.
