While touring a chateau, Marc becomes impatient for Diane taking so long in the room with the magic mirror. When Marc enters the room, he hears a voice and then a young woman named Edwina appears. They spend a short time together and Marc tells her he loves her. But when the clock strikes, she says it is too late. She disappears before his eyes and Marc is back in the room with the mirror. Seeing a portrait of Edwina, Marc asks one of the guards about her. The guard tells Marc that Edwina had died suddenly when the Montricourt family had been forced to sell the chateau.
