Le niveau physique correspond à la couche 1 du système OSI.
Il détermine la manière de transporter les éléments binaires sur un support physique. Mais cela ne se limite pas au transport même : avant et après, de nombreuses manipulations sont nécessaires.

Pour le transport du signal, nous pouvons distinguer plusieurs types de porteurs :

Les porteurs physiques
- galvaniques (signal électrique : càbles torsadés, coaxes, etc.)
- non galvaniques (fibres optiques)
Les porteurs électromagnétiques (ondes radio, faisceaux hertziens, etc.)
